Practice FAQ's

1. When are practices held?

Practice times vary by age group and time of season. A full schedule will be provided before the season begins and shared on our website and through team communication.

2. What time should swimmers arrive?

Swimmers should arrive 5–10 minutes before their scheduled practice time to  be ready to enter the water on time.

3. Are practices mandatory?

Practices are not mandatory, and attendance is not taken. However, swimmers who attend regularly tend to improve more quickly and feel more confident at meets.

4. What if we are late to practice?

If you arrive late, your swimmer can still join practice. Please have them enter the water safely and check in with a coach before starting.

5. What if my swimmer misses practice?

We understand that summer schedules can be busy. If your swimmer misses practice, no action is needed—just come to the next scheduled practice.

6. What should my swimmer wear to practice?

Swimmers may wear any comfortable swimsuit for practice. Swim shirts are discouraged, as they can interfere with proper technique and may contribute to shoulder strain.

7. What should my swimmer bring to practice?

Swimmers should bring:

  • Goggles
  • Towel
  • Water bottle
  • Swim cap (optional but recommended)

8. What happens during a typical practice?

Practices typically include a warm-up, drills to improve technique, and swimming sets focused on endurance and speed. Coaches provide instruction and feedback throughout practice.

9. How are swimmers grouped?

Swimmers are grouped by age to ensure they receive appropriate instruction and are challenged at the right level.

For under 6U morning practices, swimmers may see “A” and “B” groups listed on the schedule. These groups are created to provide more individualized attention and better coaching for all swimmers. During the first week of practice, coaches assess swimmers and place them into the group that best fits their ability. The A group is typically more advanced, while the B group is still developing foundational skills.

10. Can parents stay and watch practice?

Yes! Parents are welcome to stay and watch. We do ask that parents remain in designated areas and avoid interrupting coaches during practice.

11. What if my swimmer is nervous or new to swim team?

That’s completely normal! Our coaches and older swimmers work hard to create a welcoming and supportive environment. Most swimmers adjust quickly and begin to feel comfortable after a few practices.

12. What happens if there is bad weather?

Practices may be delayed or canceled due to weather, especially in the case of thunder or lightning. Updates will be communicated through email and the SwimTopia App! Please download this app because it is the easiest way for us to contact the team!

13. How will I know if my swimmer is improving?

You’ll often see improvement in your swimmer’s confidence, technique, and endurance over time. Coaches also provide feedback during practices and meets throughout the season.
